OSW Christmas Eve
Radio Performance
Inspires Stage Production

Adapter and director, Caroline Shaffer. says the inspiration for the Oregon Stage Works production of A Christmas Carol came from the adaptation she created for Jefferson Public Radio’s presentation of the classic tale, which is scheduled to air on the Classic & News Service 7:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve and again at 8:00 a.m on Christmas Morning .

The radio show’s cast will feature Doug Rowe as Scrooge, with Liisa Ivary, Kevin Kenerly, Don Matthews, Bob McCracken (this time as Marley), and Caroline Shaffer, who will also direct. Matthews is a familiar talent at JPR and on the concert stage;  McCracken is a longtime television actor and director; Ivary has enjoyed a career in regional theatre which includes the Oregon Shakespeare Festival; Shaffer and Kenerly are both currently members of the acting company at OSF, where Kenerly appeared last season in Top Dog Under Dog. Rowe's long résumé includes a memorable Willy Loman several years ago also at OSF.

The shortened version of Dickens' original text was adapted for stage by Caroline Shaffer.  The show opens Thursday, December 9 and runs through December 23.

“The text we are using is Dickens’ original 1843 short story,” explains Shaffer. “We have cut words and sentences and sections, but we have not rearranged or otherwise altered Dickens’ words.”  In short, the script comes straight from Dickens, replete with narrative as well as dialogue.  Book-It Repertory Theatre in Seattle and Word-For-Word Theater Company in San Francisco have earned enthusiastic followings with this innovative format that “transforms great literature into great theatre through simple and sensitive productions.”

McCracken as ScroogeThe cast includes Bob McCracken as Scrooge and Orion J. Bradshaw, Brandy Carson, Joel Handley, Shayna Marie, and Kate Sullivan playing a variety of roles. “The actors will use only Dickens’ words and their own bodies to tell the story,” says Shaffer.  As an example, she cites the scene in which Scrooge comes into his office.  The door he comes through is Brandy Carson, and the Victorian chair he sits on is Kate Sullivan.

The show, directed by Caroline Shaffer will feature original music by Todd Barton, lighting design is by G. Crane Coleman, with scenic elements by Glenn Hill.

Performances will take place at Oregon Stage Works, located at the A Street Market Place, Oak & A Streets in Ashland. Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $10 for young people 6 to 16. Seating is open.

Tickets available from The Music Coop in Ashland, Grocer's Outlet in Medford, or from the OSW Box Office, 541-482-2334.
